The Fern Hill Elementary School located on 74th and Yakima in Tacoma, consists of the renovation to a three story building built in the early 1900’s along with two separate additions to the north and south of the existing building to match.
The existing three story building is approximately 27,000 square feet and the additional total approximately 31, 000 square feet.
The project architect, BLR+B hired Grulich Architecture to assist in this unique and complicated historical renovation with matching additions.
The educational needs of the Tacoma Public Schools became the critical focus of the project with the stringent requirement of looking like a turn of the century project from all aspects. The original Fern Hill historical look and feel has been successfully maintained, a true test that the owner, design team and contracting team met their goals.
The buildings feature expanded daylight entry, sensor controlled lighting, harvesting rainwater to maximize conservation efforts.
The demolition of the entire project resulted in over 90% of all demolished materials being re-cycled.
